hello ma'am, our horses have got brands on their bodies. few have it on their shoulder , few have near the back, few on their rump. what are the uses of it?

for example, if i have a horse with this kind of brand N R 37. N R means Nirmal Ruia. he owns a stud farm called RUIA STUD FARM itseems. are these brands a kind of identification?

Answer
Hello Rohit,

That is interesting. I would like to know more about how horses in India are branded.

Branding in the States was first done out in the western part of the country. They were in large herds and grazed on open range. Branding horses (and cattle) was a way to identify them when they were rounded up for work.

Several ranches would have horses in the same large herds. Now branding has become more specialized. Warmblood breeds such as the Hanovarian are usually freeze branded, and other horses (especially out west) still carry a brand for identification. Branding is done in many countries. I do not know the history of it in other countries, however. It would be a good subject to research.
