horses and fire

Question
Is there any truth to the idea that horses freeze in a panic during a fire and can't be removed from the stable or barn?

Answer
It's not exactly true that horses "freeze" in a fire situation.  For most horses their barn and/or stall represents a place of safety, and that's why they sometimes refuse to leave or will re-enter a burning barn.  Horses are prairie animals and in the wild, if a fire starts, the herd will run from it, and if they can't outrun the fire, they will find a place of safety, for example, a canyon.  A domesticated horse still has that instinct and the stall represents that place of safety.  That's why some horses refuse to leave their stall.  Fortunately, most horses can be led to safety without too much difficulty.
