Question
I own a 6 1/2 year old Tunisian barb. Just over 15.1hh. Appears to be very healthy and in very good condition but is a very spooky and jumpy horse. Was advised that this may be due to high blood count. Just carried out a routine vet check including blood tests. Tests show that white blood cells a bit lower than reference range. Red blood cells within range. But Iron(serum)is 41.0 umol/L when the highest should be 26.  Creatinine and CPK are also significantly above reference range.  Could you please explain and suggest remedial measures?

Answer
hello!

Thanks for your question and sorry it took so long to get back to you. Life's been pretty hectic especially at the barn. I hope I can be of some help but sadly I have never actually studied equine medicine or any medicine at all actually so I don't think I can be of much help. My only suggestion would be to talk to your vet. I don't really have any explanation for this. Your vet would definitly be the one to ask and it should probably be done soon. They will be able to tell you about the results and dangers of these levels. That is really the best solution for answering your questions. As for being very jumpy, even if it is a medical reason, you could try putting random (but harmless) things in the paddock or stall with him. ie. balls, old saddles, a fluttering garbage bag tied to a fence etc. It might help it to become less jumpy. I'm sorry but that's all I can help you with.
