carriage horse

i am starting driving with my bigger miniature horse, the shafts on the cart i have maybe to short.  how much room does he need from the cart to his tail?  i know the shafts should be right at the front sholders edge.  but he seems to bump his hind feet on the back of the cart sometimes.  Seems more when he is trying to gain more than a trot.

hi dru ann. he should have at least a foot and a half extra when his leg is all the way back at a trot. best thing to do is get lobger shafts or a different cart. if he keeps hitting it he wont want to pull it because it hurts him. it can also cut his leg if he hits it hard enough. good luck.
