Question
HI FOLKS, I HAVE A 7 YR OLD MARE WITH A CALLOUS ON EACH FOOT, THEY ARE GETTING ALMOST 2"- 2 1/2" INCHES IN LENGTH THEY DON'T SEEM TO CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS BUT I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE THEM IF POSSIBLE.
HOW MUCH CAN I TRIM OFF?
WHAT IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE TOOL FOR THE JOB (HOOF TRIMMING SNIPPERS, SCISSORS, HOOF KNIFE?
WILL THEY BLEED, CAUSE MUCH PAIN, I CAN'T AFFORD TO CAUSE HER TO QUIT GIVING ME HER FEET.  I HAVE TRIED HOOF OIL ETC. TO SOFTEN THEM UP BUT THEY WON'T PEAL LIKE CHESNUTS DO.  ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANKS MUCH.

Answer
Hi Cynthia
I can't tell from your query EXACTLY where these calluses are located.  If they are located on the back of the fetlock joint...no worries.  These are another type of chestnut called ergots. They may have once been pads on the bottom of prehistoric horses toes. I've never seen a horse without chestnuts (vestigial toes) higher up on the leg...but not all horses seem to have ergots. Ergots can be larger on some horses than others.  You can trim them just as you would the chestnuts, but it is not necessary. Personally, I just snap long extensions off with my fingers and leave the rest. I wouldn't cut them too close, but a small file or nippers will do the job.  You might want to soak her in warm water for a bit to soften them if you are having problems cutting. They may even peel after soaking. They shouldn't bleed or cause her any discomfort as long as you don't cut too close.
