senior horse shelter: Rick Gore Horsemahship

Question
Hello Rick, I searched your website (great videos, thanks!) but couldn't find my answer...hope you can help me.
I need to move to new barn and have concerns for my 27 yr QH gelding's welfare.  His whole life he's been on pasture and goes indoors stall at night in cold winter (here in Canada) Will he be okay moving to place with 3 side/roof shelter - no indoors stall overnight - we can get pretty cold and blustery winters here.
Will he be okay moving to new herd of 6 horses all under age 14?
Will he get enough hay forked out instead of his usual round bale all day buffet?
He's a good old boy and I want to choose the right new home for his remaining years so I greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks
Lori

Answer
He should fine, his coat will grow more if he gets cold, he will be low horse so he will get pushed a lot, will eat last and if the young ones want the shelter, he will not be allowed in.  All part of higher horse gets privileges.

So he may need a little more care, maybe have to be taken out twice a day to give senior feed or better hay so he can eat without being pushed off.  He will probably some kick marks and bite marks until he learns his place and then he will be on the outside of the herd.  All the bad is still better than locking him up in a stall and letting him rot away alone.

Maybe the new place will allow you put a round bale in their pasture and all the horses will like it.

If he gets older his hair may thin and he may need a light blanket but you have to see, it depends on the horse, he will still need his feet picked out and daily checks but it may hard at first but in a few days he will be happier and feel safer than being locking up.
