Question
I just bought a 3 year old mare from a friend of mine. She bought her at the horse sale and couldn't train her. She was going to take her back, but I bought the her. The mare is green broke. I train horses and dont mind the work, but I think there is something else wrong with her. She has a half blue half brown eye and one solid blue eye. I brush her on the blue eye side and she dont mind alot, but if I switch sides she get upset, like she cant see me. But I waved my fingers in front and on the corners and she blinks. Is she blind or just unsure?

Answer
Many horses have blue or half blue, half brown eyes.  This is normal.  Her eye coloration may or may not have anything to do with her spooky behavior.  The best way to be sure if she has vision problems is to have your veterinarian conduct a thorough eye exam.  Many horses with light colored eyes often times will have moon blindness which is a sensitivity to quick changes in light or darkness.  Again, only a vet can diagnose that.  Her spooky behavior may also be why she was at the sale in the first place.  I recommend trying Pat Parelli's Natural Horsemanship Training techniques to help her learn to trust people.
