Question
My horse has been in labor from 9:00 am this morning, she hasn't eaten all day, she lays down then gets up and has the runs, is this normal and how long does the labor process last, her water has not broken yet.

Answer
Susan:

YOu are describing stage 1 of labor which can occur for several hours. However, once the water breaks the foal should be out in less than 30 minutes- usually within about 15. If that does not occure there is a problem. You REALLY should be in contact with a vet right now in case there is a problem. Also, a vet may need to examine her if she continues to show discomfort to make sure she is not experiencing a colic. good luck. I hope my response is rapid enough to be helpful. Let me know how it all goes!!
