Question
I am training to compete in the Maclay but in the mean time we have just bought a mare and foal. I practice my position and do flat on the mare. The foal I would like to have my foal to compete on later when she has developed her skills. At the current moment she is 3 months, I just don't know what to teach her any more.... I have fully taught her Haltering, lead rope, 20m circles, figure eight, and all grooming and some trot while leading.

Answer
Hello Haley,

I don't mean to be harsh, but I have to be stong here.

The only things you should be teaching your foal is to lead and pick up feet and to be brushed.  NO figure 8. NO trot.  NO circles.  You will cripple this foal.  I cannot say strongly enough to leave this foal alone and let it grow up.  It is an INFANT.

Where are your parents when you are doing this?  Are they horse people? The foal should not be mounted until a long 2 years old or early three and then not ridden regularly until 3.  Until then, please, oh please just let the foal grow up.

Don't teach her ANYTHING MORE. And stop the circles and figure 8 and trotting.

Best wishes,
Dorothy
