Question
Hi today out hacking my dressage mare who is years old just tripped whist trotting along on a straight bit of road, nothing spooked her and then all of a sudden we were face an knee on the floor, she took ages on getting back up which i got of and only to find out she has taken her skin of on her knees, one which she know has a whole in it, i was lucky to have her splint boots other wise it would worse, just wondering if i have done everything to make it better i got all the muck out and then hibi scrub any infection also iced it to keep the swelling down and she is on bute and on box rest with 4 or 5 walks a day is there anything else i can do to make it better for her.

Answer
Dear Tabitha,
I would hope that you have consulted a veterinarian. This site is not a alternative to acute veterinary care. I am concerned that it took your mare some time to get to her feet as well as by what may have caused her to fall in the first place- especially as you say, "on a straight bit of road." As prey animals- on those rare ocassions when horses do fall- they are usually VERY quick to get to their feet. Stall rest means stall rest- walking her with injured knees four or five times a day may be counter productive. If you have not yet had her looked at by a vet, I would recommend that you do so.
Sincerely,
S. Evans
