Question
I have recently bought an APHA 7 yo gelding for $250 with papers. My Grandfather used to own him as a stallion. He was used for breeding. My grandfather had to sell him because he was just too much of a handful. I used to take lessons with the girl who bought him. She had him roughly for a year before being deployed in the Navy. During that time, "Bo" was gelded and proceeded to drop a few hundred pounds. (He was about 150lbs overweight at my grandfather's) He was at a farm where he did not get fed regularly if at all, shoved in a small paddock with a mare for company, which he continued to breed almost every day before he was gelded. He had no hay and very little water. Then as if that wasn't bad enough, three mares were put in the paddock next to him after he was gelded. With the hormones still going, he tried to breed one, that was in heat, through the fence.  Bo got "hung up" and because the injury was so extensive, he had to have his penis amputated. His surgery was difficult and after it he kept dropping weight. I received a phone call offering Bo to me otherwise he would go to the auction. I went to see him and my heart just melted. I remembered the proud stallion that used to race around the field, not this pathetic looking horse that was skin and bones. I bought him the next day. This was Oct. 12 2007. Now he gets fed regularly and has his face in a round bale all day. He has gained 100-150lbs since I bought him. I had him vet checked, which he cleared. I had his feet checked, and other than a mild case of thrush they were okay. I recently had his teeth floated and I have also started him on a worming schedule. He has only had about 60 days of riding. I ride him bareback and on trails, but he is extremely green. We haven't hit any stumbling blocks yet...he is a fast learner and he doesn't forget. I guess I am just asking for any advice that you can offer as I have never tried to "rescue" a horse before. Thank you.

Answer
hi stacy ,
you are doing a fantastic job at bringing this horse back to health. keep the same medical routine you have, keep feeding him the way you are. with the riding, the best way to keep him content and not hard to manage is to ride him everyday.  keep his muscles working, take him on 2-4 hour trail rides. he will enjoy it and he will be well behaved. other then that just keep doing what you are. its working great and this horse now has a great home. if you hit any bumps in the road just let me know and i can help.
