Baby Turtle size and feeding

Question
Hi,

I have a very small tiny turtle. they both 1.5 inches length. read sliders. When do you think they were born? Also I tried to feed them dried commercial worms, but they don't seem to like it(not eating at all). I have gone to the petstore, but still the baby food there was too big for them to eat. so what can i possibly feed them? vegetables? Sorry for asking so many questions. Also, behavior of both are so different. one is very active, but another one is so shy, he would crawl under anything, just to hide or get under water and keep digging the little rocks.
Thank you very much

Answer
Pet shop advice is usually bad. You have to understand- it is against a federal law to sell turtles under 4" long in the United States for pets. If your store did anyway, I would not trust them on anything related to turtle care.

Your turtles were probably born in early spring, but guessing age in turtles is not an absolute science.

A good diet for them is broken up pellets of a good quality chow like Reptomin, supplemented with live or frozen/thawed blood worms or tubiflex worms.

You probably need to review the basic cares and everything. A good site for it is http://www.redearslider.com Another good site is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

One other thing we often see with turtles is overcrowding. With your two little guys, you should have them in at least a 20 gallon tank, with 40 being better. The guideline we recommend is 10 gallons of actual water per inch of shell length.

Good luck with them!
