Odd Noises from the Ponds

Question
I live on my college campus with plenty of ponds and naturally, pond life. One night, I took a walk around 9 PM or so and I heard mooing. However, it didn't sound like a cow's moo. A co-worked said she's also heard those noises late at night and suspected it might be snapping turtles in the ponds. What in the world is making this noise? Is it a turtle? A sleeping canadian goose? Frogs? What????

Answer
Between birds, insects, and frogs, there are plenty of unusal noises (turtles don't make noises much). If you let me know the part of the country you are in, I can try to help some more, but a quick trip to your biology department would probably be more helpful.

Many animals make a mooing-like sounds- a couple species of frogs and some night-calling birds, for example. A Chrous Frog makes a noise like someone clicking the teeth of a comb that is often described as sort of a 'moo', and so on.
