Question
i got a i think 1 month old baby sulcata tortoise for christmas(im 9).i have a big glass cage next to my window for sunlight, heat lamp, shelter made from a log, food, water, and sand for when the tortoise eats the sand it won't poison it.i already know what to feed it and not feed it,but my tortoise is always scared and shy.why???

Answer
Most Sulcata keepers would tell you that putting a fish tank near a window is a bad thing since the UVB rays the tortoise needs for health cannot pass through glass, and only 'heat rays' are getting in.

They would also suggest that sand is a poor material for the cage. Eating sand can cause blockages in the intestines.

Shyness is pretty common for small tortoises- they eat and hide in the wild. They also don't like being stared at by giant creatures that keep touching them and picking them up.

It will get used to you, but you may want to check out a good site like http://www.sulcatat-station.org for good dare info to see what they recommend.

Good luck!
