Breeding with turtles from wild and store

Question
We have two questions.
We have three box turtles from the wild living in an outdoor open-air pen.  We think they are females, based on an article on www.tortoise.org.
Our first question is: if we buy a male box turtle from a pet store, could we put him in the outdoor pen with the others? Or would he die/get sick?
And our second question is, would/could they breed and would it be a good idea to allow this?
Thank you very much!

Answer
There is not a quick easy answer to this.

If the male is basically healthy and you are in a region similar to its natural home, it should not be a problem.

However, they may not all get along, causing fights and stress. The male may have diseases it has picked up and can live with that the wild-caught specimans are not resistant to. He may pick up a touch of hypothermia quicker since he may not be conditioned to the outdoors anymore. He may...

You get the picture. Odds are everything will be OK, but make sure all animals are healthy first, and keep an eye on them for a while. You may only want to leave him out for a few hours at a time at first.

As far as breeding, as long as they are the same species and interested in one another- sure they could. Some species of box turtles are rather easy to breed, others are tough in captivity.

As far as 'should' you allow it- that is up to you as well. If you want ot take on the added duties and it sounds interesting, go for it. Be advised that for some species, some form of hibernation usually has to take place to get things rolling.

Good luck!
