Found baby turtle

Question
I just found a tiny baby turtle in my driveway, the closest body of water is almost a mile away from me so I have no idea where he came from. He is alive but he isnt moving very much. I have owned turtles before and he doesnt look like any Ive had before. He has thick ridges in his back and is very dark in color. I have him in a little water right now and hes moving around a bit more. I guess I wanted to know if you have any idea what kind he is or how I should treat him. Im going to set him up with some rocks, water and lettuce for now. I figure if I can nurse him back to health I can let release him far from here in a nice big lake.

Answer
It sounds like it could be a Mud Turtle or Snapper. The problem is that the habitat it will need is going to be quite a bit of trouble (lettuce, for example, is a poor diet). Try http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for more info on caring or it. The other thing is that the longer it stays out of its home range, the harder it will be to re-adapt.

I strongly recommend putting it in safe and protected place near your home- you would probably be surprised at how many wet places there are around you, and at how far they can go on the land looking for water.

Please do it soon so the turtle can find its winter location in time.

Good luck!
