Question
I have a painter turtle about the size of a mango, I found him in a park near my house.  I brought him home because I thought he might have a hard time surviving as he is missing most of his right front foot and his tail.  Seems healed, can't tell if it's from a wound or a birth defect of some sort.  Anyway, doesn't seem to slow him down.  I'm keeping him in a 35 gallon hex tank with a large plecostomus, a bluegill, and a school of feeder minnows.  He's been in the tank for about 3 weeks now, and doesn't seem to have begun to acclimate yet.  He frantically dives and surfaces over and over, then sits submerged for long periods.  He has a platform to sun himself on under a heat lamp, but he never climbs up on the thing that I can tell because the lettuce, turtle food, and even petri dish with minimal water and minnows for easy dining go uneaten.  water temp is about 70 degrees F, temperature on basking platform is 85 F.  If the water temperature is cooler than ideal you'd think he'd be eager to climb out and catch some rays, but instead its surface/dive/surface/dive over and over.  Is he crazy, or traumatized or brain damaged or what? any ideas?

Answer
Mike,     It is a turtle not a fish. It keeps diving to eat your fish. Which is what they do in the wild. He is in the wrong kind of set up, Which I am sure you have researched. Animals , reptiles, fish, they all become more accustomed quickly to their handicap then we do. If you want my opinion let him go before the cold season comes. If you decide you want to keep him go out and the first thing your going to need is at least a 29 gallon no less than  20 high great filtration and we can talk turtle.....lol Good Luck, Tina
