Question
QUESTION: Hi. I adopted my Leo Athena from petco.  Someone left her there when they couldn't care for her eye infection. Id used flukers repta rinse and it cleared up. It was due to stuck shed in her eyes. Well I keep a moist hide in her box at all times and she still gets some in there but I just make sure I flush them with saline. Unfortunately they're infected again. Ive been using the flukers but she shed the other day and it looks like she was rubbing on a rock and now has a big scab in the corner of her eye. It looks like its turning into an abscess. Its kind of hard but I think that's just due to the scab. There aren't any herp vets for 3 hours and I cant afford to travel that far nor do I want to stress her out further with that long of a car ride. Im ready to do whatever I can for her. I was wondering if I can put neosporin on it? Someone told me that you shouldn't. Also is there any pain relievers or antibiotics I can buy. I can tell shes in pain because whenever I touch it she opens her mouth.

ANSWER: Hello Maggie,

Poor girl, retained or stuck eye shed on leos is so hard on their eyes.
No, the neosporin is not good for the eyes.  You can get some terramycin which is designed for eyes.  You may be able to find it at a local feed store or online.
I would continue to use the saline solution on it daily though to help.

I sell the eye ointment, if you aren't able to find the ointment at the local feed store.

Is she eating very well right now?

Let me know how she is doing.

QUESTION: No she hasn't been eating like she used to. She used to snatch up everything I put in front of her now if I leave one in her tank like every two day shell eat it and that's it. Ill look are around for the terramycin.

ANSWER: Hello Maggie,

How are things going for her today?
Any improvement on her eyes?
Try using the sterile saline solution right now to help her out until you can get some eye ointment.
If she is not eating very well, you can also use some chicken or turkey baby food & feed it to her with a plastic syringe or plastic dropper.

Keep me posted on her.

QUESTION: Last night she ate a super worm and a waxworm so I think shes feeling better. She seemed really hesitant almost when she was trying to eat it but i think she might just be weak from eating so little. Her one eye is showing a lot of improvement but the scabed one is still swollen. She still has a lot of shed in that eye that I cant get out because of the swelling so as soon as it goes down ill try to get out as out as much as I can. I ordered the terramycin online so that should be here Monday and ill start applying that. Once a day should be fine right?

Answer
Hello Maggie,

That is great she had a superworm & a waxworm.  I hope she is feeling better.
Did you get some sterile saline solution to help flush out the eyes?
You can try getting some herbal tea bags to place on the eyes at night, warmed up & dampened, to help soften the shed.
Yes, using the terramycin once daily will be fine.
Let me know how she is doing!
