Leopard Gecko Illness?

Question
QUESTION: I've got a 3 year old female leopard gecko, she was a rescue lizard and has always struggled to feed well and maintain a good weight she was an adult when i got her and severely underweight and her growth was stunted but was starting to do well and was active.  She has been living with another female happily for the past 6 months but recently has become stressed with it as she has not been feeding well for the past 2 weeks and i have noticed over the last 3 days that her right eye has been swollen shut and she is very sleepy, i have been bathing it with boiled water which seems to help a little and i have separated her from the other female what do you think it could be and do you think she needs to see a vet, there is no sign of infection just swelling, thanks Becky

ANSWER: Hello Becky,

What type of lighting are you using?  Are you using a UVB light, & if so, what type & brand, a flourescent tube bulb or a compact or coil light?
Good that you have separated her from the other female.  Stress can cause all sorts of health problems.
The eye is swollen pretty badly?  You mentioned though, there is no discharge?  Continue to wash her eye out.  Try to get some saline solution like you would use to clean out contacts, & use that daily to rinse the eye out.  Watch closely for infection.
Do you have proper heating for her, such as an undertank heater & overhead heating?
You will need to begin to assist feed her.  Get some chicken or turkey babyfood & mix some calcium in with it, to make sure she is getting calcium.  Use either a dropper or a syringe to get her to eat some.  Drop some on the end of her nose to see if she will lick that off.  She should like it, hopefully.
What do her stools look like?

QUESTION: Thanks for the response,
I'll be sure to get hold of some saline solution and see if that helps.  There still doesn't seem to be any sign of infection but it is still closed nearly all the time until i wash out the eye then she opens it for a short period of time before shutting it again.  I did manage to get her to eat 2 wax moth larvae yesterday though dusted in vitamin/calcium powder so hopefully she will get stronger now and i bathed her for 15mins in warm water to help with dehydration should i carry on doing this?  she has a heat pad under the substrate and had a heat lamp in the other tank but there isn't one in this one she seems warm enough though, I'll be sure to check her stools she hasn't been since i moved her to the other tank. Thanks Becky

Answer
Hello Becky,
Let me know if the saline solution helps out.
You do need to monitor her temps.  The undertank heater may not quite be enough heating.  They do need a hot spot of 88-90 though, to boost immune system function.
What type of substrate are you using?  If it is a loose substrate, it would be best to take it out & put in paper towels until her eye is better in case it is irritating it.
Are you using a UVB light?  If so, what type & brand?
You can continue bathing or use a dropper to get her to drink, if possible.
Let me know how she is doing.
