Question
QUESTION: Here is my setup 30 gal tank, subtrate newspaper, water bowl, food bowl, small borrowing log, branch to climb. Reptisun 10 flourescent coil bulb, ceramic heat lamp, round thermometer and round humidity cheker thingy. Now I have the heat bulb and the UVB bulb about 6-10 inches away from the lizards, they cannot touch it. My bearded dragon are about a month old, stil really small... When I got them they were eating fine, which was about 3 days ago. At the time I had phoenix worms and they gobbled them down no problems. Now today Ive just noticed that they are extremely sleepy... I put One of the two in her feeding tank and her eyes were still closed, I put her in the tank with crix and she still didnt eat at all.... As for the other one, I kinda scared him everytime i touched him up and would open his eyes... Only if the crix moved would he eat it, or most of the time he would just shut his eyes... I know at a young age, they are gravid eaters, as I have had a beardy before, but these guys havent eatn as much as i expect them to eat. They seem reallly really sleepy all the time. If I pick them up, they might not even open their eyes to see wat is goin on... BTW my temps are rangin from 95 to about 97. Also, do you think I have the UVB bulb too close, also i purchased this bulb like a week ago. I really dont know why they are so immobile and sleepy, they would try digging under the newspaper and sleep. They arent as active as they were when I got them,  I really cant think of a solution. One more thing, with my last beardy, I did not use a reptisun 10.0 coil bulb, instead it was a cheaper uvb bulb from petco, n my beardy was doing fine at the beggining. BTW, the breeder I bought this from said that the reptisun wasnt good for bearded dragons, and it will kill them. I have read online that they are one of the best UVB bulbs out there. Please help me, as I am not sure what to do or what the probelm is.

ANSWER: Hello Moe,

I hate to say, but the Reptisun 10 compact/coil light is highly dangerous.  Here is a special report talking about the problems with the low wavelength frequency of them, & dangerous emissions.http://www.uvguide.co.uk/phototherapyphosphor.htm

So, I would take the light out immediately & do not put another UVB light in there for a couple of weeks so he can recover.  The UVB light you need is the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb.  You can get it from  www.petmountain.com
What type of basking light are you using, is it a bright white light or a colored light?  You mentioned a ceramic heat lamp?  Does it emit just heat then?  If so, that has made things a little worse because they have no protection of bright light to protect the eyes.
Bearded dragons need bright white light to thrive.  Plus, when using UVB lights, they need eye protection, which is what the bright white basking lights provide for them.  It allows the pupil to constrict to allow less light inside of the eye reducing chances of damage.
A halogen is a great light to use, in conjunction with the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb.  You will need to place the UVB tube bulb directly beside the basking light at one end, to create a focused basking area in which they can get heating & UVB all in one area.

Let me know how they are doing after you take the coil light out.  Replace that with the Reptisun flourescent tube bulb in a couple of weeks, but right now, just use a bright white halogen light for a basking light & let them recover.
You will need to begin rehydrating them too, daily, with oral fluids as much as possible.

QUESTION: Thank you for the swift response, I have taken out the coil bulb, which sux becuase I bought 4 of them from someone thru ebay... Unfortunately, one died, and i dont think it was the bulb, i think it was impactation. He ate a superworm and wasnt able to digest it (my diagnosis). He kept on flinching if i touched him. I put him in a warm bath and he pooped a lil, and died that nite. Now the other one is alive. However he stopped eating as much recently. I have been giving him either silkworms and phoenix worms buh he doesnt seem to be eating any silkworms anymore. He will eat a few phoenix worms, maybe like one or two. BTw i changed the bulb to a reptisun 5.0. I think it is 5.0. It is not a tube or coil it is the regular like balloon shaped bulb.. The one that is alive seems to be doing fine except the fact that his eating habit has decreased alot. He is running around fine and moving. No twitching legs, nothing seems to be wrong except that he is not eating properly. He is pooping fine too. I cant get the tube buld becuause the holder and bulb i cannot afford. Please help me out here, if this guy dies I am just going to get a juvie or an adult dragon which arent as difficult to take care of and do not require 24/7 care. Please let me no what i can do, a trip to the vet is out of the question as i am disappointed at the last results of my dragon. I spent too much money on it and it died. Basically i threw alot of money in the garbage! PLEASE HELP ME

Answer
Hello Moe,
Good you took the coil bulb out.
The UVB light you have now, it doesn't sound like a UVB light.  Can you post a picture of it?
If you want to get a decent light, go to  www.petmountain.com  They are cheaper than at a petstore.
The only UVB lights that are shaped like a lightbulb are the mercury vapor bulbs, but they are more like a halogen.  If you can't get a UVB light, they will not make it long term, & neither will any juvie.
The juvies & adults need proper lighting also, so let's try to get the ones you have now to survive.
The reason that they are not eating is due to the lighting initially & the lighting now.  Proper UVB lighting helps them assimilate their calcium & vitamins, & without it they will get metabolic bone disease.
What basking light are you using, a bright white light or a colored light?  Can you post a picture of your tank setup for me?
Home Depot or Lowes has flourescent tube fixtures for good prices you could try that.  You can get by pretty cheap on the initial setup but UVB is imperative.
