he is not ill and is eating fine i have been fedding him apple skin and swabbing his mouth with a swab and iodine

Great the he is doing pretty well, despite the mouth issue.  You will need to continue swabbing his mouth/gums with a swab & betadine.  If that area does not completely clear up & recommend getting him put on a broad spectrum antibiotic to keep the infection from spreading.
