wood shavings as bedding

Question
I was just given a pet rabbit, and I was doing some research on how to look after it. I read that you are not supposed to put them on pine or cedar shavings~! is this true? if so, what material is a better choice?
TIA Christina (new rabbit owner)

Answer
Dear Christina,

Cedar, and, I believe pine as well, contain oils that are toxic to rabbits, so those types of shavings should not be used if the rabbit sits on or can touch the bedding. If the rabbit is in a cage with a tray in the bottom so that it cannot touch the shavings (this type of cage is often prefered because it is more sanitary, since the rabbit is not sitting in its own urine and feces. Exessive eating of the feces can cause diseases, and sitting in urine will make the rabbit messy), cedar or pine would be okay, as long as the rabbit is not allowed to touch it. Some rabbits are allergic to the strong scent of cedar, so if the rabbit's eyes started watering, or it showed other signs of a possible allergy, try a different kind of bedding. Even if the rabbit is in a cage with a tray, though, the tray should be cleaned regularly (probably once a week or so), and the inside of the cage should be free of piled stools and other messes.
If the rabbit is in a cage where it sits in its bedding,
white shavings should be fine.

I hope this helps!
God Bless!
