Our rabbits health

Question
Our rabbit is approximately 4 1/2 years old.  He is normally kept in the house on hot and cold days.  Basically, when the heat or air condition need to be on.  On nice cool days, he is kept in a large hutch, 4ft by 8 ft.  in the shade.  He has been out for a few days due to the nice weather.  Today, I didn't realize how hot and humid it was going to be before leaving for work and failed to bring him in.  When I checked on him, I found that he didn't appear to be himself. Not to mention, we noticed a lot of flys around him, some were even clinging to him.  I had to pick them off of him and brought him into the air-conditioned house.  Prior to bringing him in, I did notice that he was drinking from his water bottle.
I gave him a full dish of food and fresh water.  He dumped the food and basically laid with his face up against the cage.  I noticed then that he has a lot of fleas on him also..  These weren't there the other day before I put him outside.  He is not himself.....
My daughter just checked on him and said that he is looking a little better, and is now eating a little.

I do understand that heat is a very dangerous thing for a rabbit, but like I said the heat and humidity snuck up on us.  I didn't even have the air conditioner on before I left for work, which if the rabbit was in the house, it would have been worse than outside in the shade.

One of my questions is , do you think that he is sick from the heat?  Also, what can be done about these horrible fleas... please note, he hasnt even scratched and I saw alot of fleas on him.
One more things.... what is the normal lifespan of a rabbit?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer
Dear Mary Beth

Sorry I forgot to answer your last question about lifespan.  A healthy, neutered/spayed house rabbit can live 10 years or more, depending on genetics, husbandry and just plain luck.

Let's hope your bunny is lucky, and has not been attacked by maggots!

I hope to hear soon that he's fine.
