QuestionPLEASE HELP! My 6mo. old lop was fine yesterday and today has developed white pus in the corner of both eyes. I believe she also has sneezed twice. One week ago she was boarding at a animal hospital for ten days. She seemed fine when I picked her up last week. Is this conjunctivitis? Is there something over the counter? Is this life threatening?
Please answer ASAP.
Thanks
AnswerHi Elvira,
this probably is not conjuntivitis - that is more a reddened, irritated eyeball surface, not pus. Pus is a sign of infection or a virus. The white blood cells are attacking bacteria or a virus she picked up.
The problem with infections in the head area of rabbits is that it is such a small space, it can spread if not treated quickly. There is no over-the-counter thing you can get as a pet owner. Besides you have no idea what it is, so you wouldn't be able to buy what would work against it anyway.
The solution is to get her to a vet, quickly, like tomorrow. You don't want the infection travelling into the lungs or heart or brain. It's already in the sinuses if it's in her eyes. The vet can make a better diagnosis so that he/she can prescribe medicine that will work against that particular bacteria/virus.
So your good rabbit vet is key. In the meantime just keep cleaning her eyes until you can get to the vet.
