Rex with sore hocks

Question
Hi. I have a rex rabbit whose hocks are sore looking. I'm seeing a vet about it at the moment. She's on Flamazine(human burns cream)cream twice daily and 1 drop of metacam a day. I've also moved her and my other bun(not a rex) out into their run 24/7 so she's on grass hoping that the more forgiving surface would help. I've been following this regime for 3 weeks now and there doesn't seem to be much improvement. Part of the problem is that she tends to overgroom the affected areas. I was wondering if spraying a false skin ( wound dressing which eventually just sloughs off and is flexible enough to use on human knuckles) would give the area some extra protection. I'll try to post a picture of her hocks.

Answer
Sore hocks do take a long time to heal.  Certainly it looks like you are making progress.

There's information on treating sore hocks at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabrefs.html#hocks

I've used diaper ointment with zinc oxide in it, but rabbits are known to lick that off also.

I would ask your vet before trying the spray, I've not tried that and don't know if it is safe for rabbits.

If she will tolerate it, you can try wrapping the feet in vet wrap, but most rabbits will tear that off.  You can put gauze on the sores then put vet wrap over that.
