Question
My fiance' and I adopted a dwarf lion head buck, he's the sweetest boy, and our baby.  Another family asked us to take their Dalmatian rabbit, and we couldn't turn the offer down since we would be saving the rabbits life.  After spending some time with the bunny and figuring out his temperament, we decided to introduce the two. It was an instant hit!  Both bunnies were so happy to be together.  Then I found out that the Dalmatian was not a male bunny like we were told, he is actually a she!

We've kept the bunnies in separate cages, they even have different run times. When they are together they're well supervised.

Now, whenever the buck is near her she makes strange noises and won't let him come any closer.  This morning after giving a morning "pet" I reached for her food bowl to re-fill and she lunged and bit me.  Its really hard to read her new behavior, and I don't understand what she wants/needs.

Please help.

Thank You!

Answer
Hi Kelly,

unless you know for sure that your female was spayed, she's pregnant.  If she was recently spayed, she's going through a false pregnancy.

I would suggest checking out the House Rabbit Society web site (www.rabbit.org) and going down to the bottom of the main page, search for articles with the term 'behavior', 'pregnant' and 'lunging'.
