rabbits and warble fly

Question
My vet believes my rabbit has a warble fly larvae under its
skin.  He said it will run its course or he can remove it
surgically.  What is your opinion?

Answer
Dear Lynda,

Because a botfly larva can cause complications, I would have it surgically removed.  There actually are ways besides surgery to get the larvae out, including placing a piece of tape over the opening until the larva grows weak from lack of oxygen, and then *very carefully* squeezing it out.

It would probably not be a bad idea to ask about putting the bunny on antibiotics.  The empty botfly cyst has a tendency to become infected and nasty.

I hope this helps.
