holding new bunny too much?

Question
Just hours ago we got a pet store bunny.  We have been careful to introduce him to the household as gently as possible.  He seems extremely content to sit on my chest while loosely wrapped in a towel.  We does not seem stressed.  I have read that it is best to leave a new bunny alone for the first few days.  Is that true or can I continue to hold him if he is receptive?

Answer
Hi Karen,

yes it is true that is the rule of thumb.  Basically you kind of want to let him get used to his cage housing the first day, and basically slowly introduce him into the surrounding room.  You can use a pet exercise gate and slowly move it to give him more room in the room.  Make sure you bunnyproof cords and get the plants out of reach, and maybe get rid of the toxic ones altogether.  If you hold him a bit and he is fine with it, that is okay.  But you should otherwise let him be the first day or so to adjust.  New environments are a huge stressor on rabbits.

Write back anytime.  PS - make sure he has plenty of alfalfa and timothy hay to eat.  this is what most of his diet should be.  No greens, no fruits, no sweets at this age - it could damage him or kill him as his gut is not seasoned enough to handle these properly yet.
