Question
Hi I have a bunny and the only veggies I give her so far is carrots and cellery.  Can house rabbits eat red and green cabbage? if so is it healthy to give her pre-packaged coleslaw with carrots and red/green cabbage?

Answer
Well, your rabbit needs to eat a varied diet of vegetables.  The most nutritious veges for rabbits are some of the same ones that are good for people, particularly the green leafy kinds.

Rabbits can eat cabbage, but many people think it causes gas and should only be given rarely if never.  Celery is ok, but probably shouldn't be the foundation of a good vegetable diet.  Carrots are something your bunny should only get a little bit of, like a treat.  Carrots pack a lot of sugar.

What I do is use a dark lettuce like romaine and/or dandelion greens as a base.  Then I add other veges.  Usually two or three more and make a salad out of it.

If the produce choices are slim at the store, you can buy prepackaged salad mixes.  But you have to be careful and look at the ingredients.  Avoid anything with iceberg lettuce.  Some of the types I've bought during down produce times are called spring mix, herb mix, or baby romaine mix.

I hope this helps
