Rabbit - molar problems

Question
Hi

I have 2 house-rabbits.  They've both had to have dental work done recently on their molars as they were starting to cause problems for them with their eating.  Their incisors are fine and well worn down.  Their diet is fresh vegetables, hay and rabbit mix.  Is there anything you can recommend to help them both keep their molars 'ground' down so they don't cause them any further problems?  I have an excellent vet who has opperated on them both but I was looking for preventative advice too.

Answer
Dear Kathryn,

If hay and fresh vegetable aren't enough to keep the molars trim, then the BEST thing is outdoor time eating fresh grass that's free of pesticides, fertilizers, or contact with wild animals that could carry parasites.

The natural motion of chewing moist grass is the absolute best way to keep bunny molars smooth, and we've actually had a rabbit with a severe premolar malocclusion that never need filing because she were outside eating twigs and grass.

I know this isn't an option for everyone, since you need a safe, fenced yard and constant supervision of the bunnies.  But if you can manage it, this is definitely the most effective way to maintain dental health.

Hope this helps.
