Question
Hi Dan! I purchased a rabbit hutch from Petsmart for my bunny. It is made out of cedar wood. Do you think this is toxic for my rabbit? I know that cedar shavings are toxic. I figured that a company would not make a product specifically for a rabbit that was toxic to the pet...Am I being naive? PLease advise on this because I will get another cage for her. Thanks!
Stacey

Answer
Hello Stacey!
Well I know many people who believe that Cedar shavings are Toxic but they are not deadly they irritate the mucus membrane and this may cause your rabbit to have breathing problems.
I have not had any problems with hutches made out of cedar. if the wood is treated cedar i would return it and state your concern.
Most wooden hutches are made out of pine or white wood this is cheaper wood but the rabbits tend to chew on it and the hutch does not last long.  You could line the exposed part of the hutch with plywood  if this would make you feel better.
I think your rabbit will be fine.
Good luck
Dan
