Pet rabbit exhibits unusual behaviour

Question
I recently (maybe a month or two ago)changed my rabbit's diet. We were feeding her very unhealthily, and I was not aware of how very much hay they needed (I was informed that their diet should be 90% hay). So, I definitely upped the hay availability, and bought rabbit-recommended snacks, for treats. Also, maybe a week ago, we cut her nails, which we never did before (we've had her for several years). I have noticed changes, like her poopy bottom problem seems to have greatly improved (the poopy bottom was the reason I inquired into diet changes), and tonight she seemed more energetic, and more excited to see me than normal. I was thinking that this was a good change, a happy bunny because of better diet. But it worried my father. Her behaviour did not come across as a good thing, but rather a bad one. He was worried that something had her worked up, and that a change in her behaviour was something worrisome, and that perhaps there was something wrong. It seems he perceived her more as being scared than happy. I was simply wondering what your take on this was?

Answer
Hi,

it is good you changed her diet to a more healthy one.  She will start slimming down to a better weight, and she will start to feel better not carrying around the extra weight.  She will feel more like running around and moving more.  We had an overweight gal we got back down and as they lose the weight it feels good to be able to exercise and run and play, they feel more like playing and expressing themselves when they are trim.  She will also at the same time as she becomes more active, lose fat and gain some muscle mass, which is great for her health.

She may have been a little excited more than normal because of the nail trim.  If you can't pin it down to anything specific, like storms, or a noise that you knew scared her, it's probably just the unusual nail trim thing - not part of the regular routine.  It should easily pass and she should be back to normal within an hour or two after that.  Best time to do nail trims is in the later afternoon hours when they are still a little sleepy and resting.  Onyl have to do them every 6-8 weeks depending how fast the nails grow.
