Ear Flushing for infection

Question
Dear Dana,

My lop, Chloe (7yrs), has recently developed an ear infection.  The first vet I went to put him on Baytril Otic drops.  The second vet said that she never uses drops because its almost always an inner ear infection and she goes right to antibiotic injections.  She has recommended an ear flush under sedation.  This will cost me just over $700.00.  I am not against doing this but am wondering if it is a wise choice.  I have not dealt with this before.  I read an answer you had give a few years ago recommending an ear flush system.  The vet said the infection is mild at present.  I am wondering what to do that would be best for Chloe and if, that could also be a cost effective solution? Of course his health is my first priority.  Any advice you can give is appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Rachel,

Wow.  I've never heard of a $700 ear flush.  That sounds beyond excessive.  I do agree with the vet that ear drops are usually ineffective, especially in lops with their awful, closed ear canals.  But MAN.  They must have a very nice hospital with gold fixtures and silk wall-hangings.  And butlers.

My vet has done ear flushes with the bunny wide awake and untroubled by using the ear flush system I described in the post you saw.  I dont remember what he charged, but it was under $50.

You can also do this with a pediatric ear syringe and disinfectant ear flush for very little $$ at home, but you should have the vet show you how this is done safely, so you don't harm her ear drums or other structures.

If there is any pus or exudate in the ears, ask for a culture and sensitivity test:

If this is a very early, mild infection, then an ear flush (especially to the tune of $700) may be overkill at this point.  I'd ask about just starting her on the systemic antibiotics and see how that does.

Note, though, that lops are prone to ear infections because of the abnormal conformation of their ears and ear canals.  You may be in this for the long haul.  :(

I hope this helps.

Dana
