Sick wild rabbit

Question
Hi, I know that you deal in domestic rabbits but I was hoping that you could help.  I live in the countryside and was driving home tonight when I passed a very large rabbit/small hare just sitting on the edge of a cut corn field.  I thought that this was very strange so my partner got out of the car to see if it was ok.  The rabbit let him walk right up to it and did not seem to register that he was even there. We shone a torch on it and could not see any physical injuries. It tried to get up and was very shakey and almost fell onto it's nose to stable itself then just sat there. Not wanting to stress it out anymore I got back into the car and called the RSPCA. They said to put it in the boot and take it to the vets in the morning.  Not having a box to keep it in over night and only having a horse blanket in the car to wrap it up in we were sat contemplating what to do when the rabbit started fitting and then fell on it's side. It was still alive and was twitching but we decided knowing nothing about rabbits or possible diseases that we should not try to touch it and let nature take it's course. The rabbit had very clear eyes that were not runny or gungy. Do you know what it could have been? I felt awful leaving it there, do you think that we did the best thing? Should I do anything different if I find a similar rabbit again?

Many thanks,
Rose.

Answer
hi rose I suspect it was in shock from maybe nearly being run down or a fox might have scared it
the fitting would be brought on by this and  you did the right thing leaving it. it may recover but if you had  taken it the stress would be to much.
