3 male rabbits

Question
We have 2 male rabbits living together who are different breeds, but both dwarf.  They are approx. 10 months old, came from different farms, but were introduced to our hutch at the same time.  The hutch is homemade, and is approx 6 feet long by 3 feet wide.  It is enclosed on both ends, with a wide open area in the middle.  These two rabbits have no problem living together.  They sleep on each other, play together, take turns humping each other :) (yes, it's true).  They have never showed any signs of aggression or not getting along.

A friend of ours had a tame male rabbit start hanging around their house a while back.  This rabbit is incredibly nice and tame.  Example: he had a ripped toe nail, and simply layed on my lap as I washed it with peroxide and cleaned it up.  He never moved.  He is clearly not a wild rabbit, so was most likely dumped.

Is it possible to have all three males live in the hutch together?  We put them together, and my are their friendly, curious selves.  The dumped bunny seems to simply find a corner, lay down, and not take notice when the other two lean on him, hop by, etc.

We did leave them alone together for several hours.  When we returned is when the torn nail was noticed.  The cage does have a wire bottom in the open area (not the enclosed areas).  There is no evidence of a scuffle, fight, etc.  Simply looks like he got his nail caught on something.  I divided the cage in half with a piece of plywood, so they are currently separated; but our bunnies don't seem happy having restricted space.

Can you offer any insight or advice?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Melinda,

Are these male bunnies neutered?  It is nearly impossible to bond 2 neutered males much less 3.  I would suggest building a separate hutch for the new bunny.  It is possible that they could have supervised play time in a large enclosure but it would be very unsafe to leave them alone together unsupervised.  I would not even trust the 2 males together if they are not neutered.  It just takes one influx of hormones and they could literally kill each other.  However if they are neutered and bonded you are very lucky.

Good luck
