Pig mange

Question
Hello Patricia, I recently brought home a 7 wk old mini potbelly on the 29 of Dec. 2012. I had done some research on looking for right type and reasonable price, also what to look for in a healthy pig. I found an add for piglets, so made a trip to take a look, and I guess got caught up in the cuteness of the piglet and not really knowing the sure signs of a healthy pig, I check him over, and that was about it. The young lady that was selling them had both ma/pa pig and I failed to ask to see them or their living condition. She wasn't a breeder, I think her pig just had a litter and she was selling them. What struck me funny, the young lady's mother had told us that the ma/pa pigs were her daughter's and that they had to keep them outside because her daughter was allergic to the pigs. I thought that's strange, I read that pigs don't cause allergy, but on the other hand it could be possible. So, after having the pig home in the first 2 days I start itching a breaking out, and the pig seem to be excessively scratching on the corners of furniture. So, I did more research on itchy piglets and find out that the mange could be the culprit. made an appt. got him in yesterday, found out that yes it is the mange and he gave him the initial shot of Ivermectin, and two follow up doses. So, that to me, states  that the conditions were not good.  Although he is happy and healthy, his skin has a build up of scales from the mange. So I guess my question is will the scales gradually fall of to get back to the actual skin of the pig w/brushing and baby oils? I'm just so leery of getting near the dander of the mange, cause I'm still itchy too and wondering how long will it last after him being treated? Or have I picked up some other parasite from the pig?

Answer
Hello,
If the piglet was infected with mites......you very likely have them also.
You should contact your Doctor and find out how you should be treated.
Mites can be air born so you may have to disinfect anything you or the piglet has come ino contact with.
these little critters have a life cycle of 12 to 14 days so a second treatment is required.
If you get little red itchy bumps on you....that is what it is.
I'm sorry you are having to experience this.
We always treat our piglets several times before thy go to their new homes.
As far as lasting effects on your piglets skin.....It will most likely get better as soon as the mite are no longer a problem and with lots of baths, soaking and coat and skin conditioners and brushing.
