Question
hello

i have 2 lil rattie girls (Amelia Mignonette aka Mia and Cissy Alexandria)

Cissy who is about 2 is the one who is not doing so well , she has a tumor (i have taken her to the vet twice and she was alot of help)

i thought she was going to leave me a few days after the vet but she seems to be hangin in there
she has lost tons of weight and hair and she almost seems to  be going blind maybe because she is very wobbly and bumps into everything and can not climb at all

she can hardly eat any solid foods either so i give her baby food a couple times a day (shes still not putting on any weight though)

okay so to get to my question.... i would just like your advice on what else i might feed her to help her gain some weight and i dont think she is in bad pain but her life isnt too great so i was just wondering if you think i should put her down :/ i really dont know

Answer
Where is the tumor located? I was wondering if the vet removed it or if she still has it?  The tumor has made her lose weight because it becomes vascular and robs the  rats body of the nutrients she would normally get from the food. This in turn takes a toll on her vital organs and they cannot function properly either. She has lost her fur because of being malnourished and probably is losing her vision due to organ failure too. Tumors can be brutal, but the good news is that they are easily removed in most cases and are almost always  benign mammary tumors, especially in female rats.  You wont get her to put weight on as long as the tumor is there and even if you feed her high calorie foods, it wont matter because she wont benefit from it. She may get a little strength back but its unlikely.  When the tumor becomes too large, it loses its blood supply and starts to rot. In turn, the bacteria in the tumor leaks into the rats body and poisons her. She will eventually end up with sepsis and it is an unpleasant death. However, this only pertains to her if she still has the tumor on her and it wasn't removed.

If she doesn't have the tumor a, its an entirely different story. You can start to feed her slowly offer her boost or ensure. They are both in liquid form and help replenish calories pretty fast. You can also let her lick some nutrical from you but not too much..this is loaded with fats. Also, you can give her some soy formula as well.  Allow her to lick though and not chew because when they are sick and  weak,it is too much for them to have to make an effort to chew..they  become  exerted too fast if they have to chew which is one reason why they may stop    eating.

Please don't hesitate to write again  and please, be sure to keep me posted.
