vaginal bleeding lupron

Question
QUESTION: Hi sandra
i about a month i wrote to you about my ratty who had baytril burn of her
head after an injection the vet gave her when i took her to there becuase of
vaginal bleeding.
The burn has completely healed and she is happy and active as ever. She had
pus and blood dishcharge from her vagina  and the pus cleared up after the
anitbotics but the bleeding has come back.

It seemed like quite alot and with a few little blood clumps. so i booked an
appointment to see the vet and they have blocked off a slot for a spay that
day depending on what i decide with the vet.

My question is she has no lumps anywhere on her body and i would rather do
everything else but spay her becuase shes old 2 1/2 and so happy and active.
Even though she has no visible tumors would lupron be a possible non-
surgical solution? And if its an injectable will it leave a burn like the baytril
did?

i have read your page on it on your website as well as other questions and it
seems that it is used when there are visible tumors, not just for vaginal
bleeding.

ANSWER: Yes you can use it to try to shrink the tumors as well. Also no, it should not leave a burn like baytril.  Baytril is very caustic which is why it caused damage to the skin and surrounding tissues.

The problem I see with your rat though is not tumor related but rather she is having repeated uterine infections, right?  In order to get rid of the infections the source of infection needs to be removed, which is obviously the uterus or other reproductive organs.  The lupron stops vaginal bleeding when it is associated with hormonal problems or polycystic ovaries. It wont stop bleeding/infection.

Also, do you trust your vet? Is your vet an experienced exotic vet that also has the proper implements for surgery?

QUESTION: I'm nervous because i don't want to go to the same vet that gave her baytril
burn so i was going to try another vet that says he is exotic certified and has
been practicing for 27 years but i have never used him before. For vancouver
all the local breeders and rescues go to the vet that gaver her baytril burn and
swear by him for surgeries. He did remove a large tumor from the inner body
cavity of my old rat and she recovered well from that and lived on a few more
months. so i don't really have full trust in either. If its an ongoing infection is
it not possible to treat her ongoing with anti-botics or is that too hard on her
little system?

Thank you for your always quick replys and advice!

Answer

I know how you feel....I dont like spays myself to be honest.

I hate to tell you NOT to spay her and have her end up developing a fatal infection....but on the other hand, I would like to check this vet for you if you want...his credentials. You can write me and make the message private and let me know his name etc... your in Canada, right?
27 years is a long time to practice....but you should ask him if they keep her over night for observation too, just see what they say about it
