rats eye appears bloody

Question
I have a grey-hooded dumbo eared rat, male about 1 year and a half. He seems to be acting normal, not lathergic or anything, but his right eye looks like it's bleeding from the inside. The blood isn't freash though, it's almost mucus/blood. It's like a maroon color, for lack of a better way to describe it! It is slightly swollen, but he can still open and close it all the way. He lets me wipe it and feel around it and it doesn't seem to hurt him. What could this possibly be? He is otherwise a very healthy rat. The only other thing we've gone to the Vet for was mites and that is taken care of now.

Thank you!

Elise

Answer
Elise;
Hrrrrrrm .. the swollen bit has me concerned. I'd say possibly an abcess behind the eye or maybe trauma to the socket itself, but honestly, I couldn't tell you for sure without being able to look him over in person. You probably want to take another trip back to the vet for a more qualified opinion. Good luck!
