Question
my rat is around 2yrs he was recently seperated from him cage mate whom was re-homed due to severe bulying, since then he has rapidly gone down him it started off as him losing a little waiting and becoming unsteady on his feet,  took him to the vet who diagnosed him with with a chest infection and annemia and perscribed baytril for him this was on wednesday since friday night he has rapidly gone down hill he is very lathargic has red tears badly and dischrge around his nose and i am having to syringe feed him which he is taking well, when he is out of his cage he is as active as he can be but when you place him back he hardly moves. there are no appointmens avaliable at my vets til late this evening but i dot want to be fobbed off with more drugs to stick down him if it would be kinder to put him to sleep. help :(

Answer
sounds like he needs different medication.  I would suggest that the vet take a more aggressive approach and use different medications other than baytril.  In fact, bqytril is not the drug of choice when dealing with secondary infections.  How did your rat become anemic?
Sounds like he needs amoxil or doxycycline and baytril used simultaneously.  The vet should run blood work to see what type of bacteria he has.  I would not put him down because he has not had alot of the right treatments done yet so he has a good chance of pulling out of this providing your vet gets on the ball and uses the right treatment rather than concentrate on just one medication.
