Question
Hello. My pet rat Petunia is about a year and a half. She recently has been losing her hair. It started around her tail and is now spreading upward on her back. She looks skinnier than before as well. I got her new food which is supposed have all necessary nutrients and have been feeding her tofu on a daily basis.

AS well as yogurt and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Other than the hair loss her behavior seems mostly normal. A few days ago I heard a sound from outside which I thought was a bird but came to find out there is a family of bats living outside their bedroom.  The last couple weeks she seems more skittish and not as cuddly. Could she be stressed from the noise of the bats? Or is there something I can change in her diet that will promote hair growth?  Any advice would help. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Please refer to sandyscrittercity.com.  Check out the page on proper diet and also the page on skin ailments. I am willing to bet that its her diet.  Any diet other than the exception of a few  quality rat foods such as Oxbows regal rat, harland teklads rodent blocks and if there is no other choice, rat blocks by Mazuri, there is nothing else worth buying on the pet store shelves. Seed mixes by ANY name are just junk, period.
