behavioral problem

i have a pair of parakeets that have had babies in the past. recently they had another baby and the mom ended up attacking it and biting its beak off..what would have caused this?

Hello Erika and thank you for your post.
It is possible that there was something wrong with the baby.  This is not unusual behavior if the baby was sick.  As bad as it sounds, this is the way that breeds of birds keep their species pure and healthy.  It is really a defense instinct.  A sick bird in a flock can spread the illness to the rest of the flock. and make it easier for that flock to become prey.
The next time she hatches any babies, I suggest removing them and hand rearing them yourself to keep this from happening again.
