18 wk old Macaw head bobbing and fluffed

Question
Hi!!  We just got a 18 week Macaw than had been hand fed and now eating her regular diet.  However, I noticed since yesterday that she is bobbing her head up and down all the time plus her head feathers are "fluffed" so to say.  She is eating and drinking great.  I have a variety of diet and she eats about anything.  She is screetching here and there..but not too bad.  She does have one wing that she stretches out almost like waving or something.  If I walk out the room, she screetes..lol  But I am concerned about her "head bobbing" and the ruffled feathers on her head since this is new since yesterday.  Thank you

Answer
How long have you had this bird?

Are you taking regular weights using a gram scale?  If not, this is pretty important since it's an excellent way to catch an illness or disorder early, before it becomes complicated (and costly).

How about heat source?  You might want to try putting a heating pad set on 'low' under the bottom of the cage and draping a thick blanket all around - leaving just the front door uncovered.
Another heat option is to fill a thick, clean sock with raw, white rice about 3/4 full; knot the end, microwave it for 1- 1 1/2 minutes - shake it out to distribute the heat and put in the bottom of the cage to generate heat.

You can supplement the food, just in case the bird's not getting enough on their own - by adding a teaspoon of natural baby food (no additives) here and there. Ours enjoy sweet potatoes, squash, mixed vegetables and so on.  Offering about a teaspoon of natural yogurt a day is another healthy option.

Obviously, don't keep the cage covered all the time, but until you're sure nothing is wrong with this (girl?) the heat is very important.

It's worth having her vet visit made sooner than later.
