Question
hi there i have a question about my two parakeets.first of all i believe i have a female parakeet and a male parakeet. Secondly the female is very very aggressive towards me and the male parakeet. My reason for her being aggressive is that she has been alone for 6 years. Could this why she is very aggressive towards me and the male parakeet? and also can i stop her aggression towards me and the male parakeet? please help if you can. And one more question how can i set the mood for them so they can breed?

Answer
Hi, AA,

1.  Male keets have blue ceres (the cere is the colored area above the beak).  Females have brown/beige/tan/white ceres.

2.  Your female could be aggressive toward the other bird if she's been alone for 6 years, but this doesn't necessarily explain why she is aggressive toward you.  How long have you had the male bird?  How long have you owned these birds?  How long have they been together?  Was the female tame toward you in the past?  Was either handraised?  How old is the male?  It is not uncommon for an untame bird to be aggressive toward their human and/or other birds.

3.  I would need more details about the entire situation, cage setup, age of both birds, how long you've owned both birds, any other birds in the same cage, and any other details you can provide in order to try and answer your qustion about stopping her aggression toward you and the other bird.

4.  It isn't a "mood" that sets the stage for breeding.  First of all, your birds have to be pair-bonded to each other before they will even think about breeding.  If they aren't compatible like you describe, this hasn't occurred yet.  Pair-bonded is when the male feeds his female beak-to-beak and they otherwise show affection toward each other.  If/when this occurs, you can then set up a nesting box.  The birds will take it from there.
