lutino with recurrent respiratory infection

Question
I have a 2 year old female lutino budgie.  Since May (5 months) she has had sneezing and crusting of her nostrils.  Our veterinarian (who is not a certified avian veterinarian but has had avian training and is the most experienced avian veterinarian in our area) has treated her with Baytril (fluoroquinolone antibiotic).  She also gave her vitamin A injections which really seemed to perk her up within a few days.  From late June until last week the bird seemed fine.  Then she started sneezing again so I took her back to the vet and she irrigated her nostrils with antibiotic solution, gave her a Vitamin A injection, and gave me Baytril solution for 10 days.  My question is whether Lutino birds are more prone to Vitamin A deficiency and whether this bird should have regular supplementaton of Vitamin A.  She loves Broccoli and carrots so I thought she was getting enough in her diet.  She has a high quality pelleted diet mixed with seeds (about 50/50).  I found an article about albino canaries needing more Vitamin A than other canaries.  Could the same be true for Budgies?  Should I try to give her more vitamin A - if so what are better sources?  Should she have regular injections of Vitamin A?

Answer
It is possible that it's a vitamin A deficiency but it can also be a vitamin D deficiency. Mangoes and cantaloupe have TONS of vitamin A in them, and I would give her only pellet diet because if you mix pellets and seeds, lots of times the bird will just pick out the seeds (if I gave you a plate with liver mixed with cookies, which would you eat?). Which pellets are you using? Kaytee has their pellets go through such a harsh process (extruding) that lots of the vitamins are gone! Zupreem has a pretty good food, but Roudybush is my personal favorite. Lutino birds are very prone to illness, so you have to make sure that they get all the vitamins and minerals they need. Since she likes fresh foods, you can use a supplement called Prime by Hagen and put it on the fresh foods. It has lots of the nutrients she'll need. If she also has a vitamin D deficiency (common in Lutinos) you can purchase a featherbright or avianglo lamp. These lights have the full natural spectrum of light which encourages the bird to produce vitamin D. Make sure the vet doesn't put her on Baytril too much because it's one of the safest medications to give a bird, but the bacteria can also build up a resistance easily.
