african grey beak care

Question
my african grey is approaching 3.  She seems very happy, however I have noticed her beak peeling in the middle.  Then the sides seem chipped as if she messed it up chewing up something.  Is it normal for their beaks to do this? Is there a formula for beak care.  Could she be deficient in a vitamin to cause this?

Answer
Hello Karen and thank you for your post.
This is normal for the medium sized and larger Parrots.  Keep a watch on her, though.  If it looks like it is bleeding, or she has any trouble eating, then she might need to be seen by a Certified Avian or Exotic Animal Vet to have her beak trimmed and shaped.
You can give her some Avian Vitamins to be sure that all of your bases are covered, but if she is on a pelleted diet, then the Avian Vitamins shouldn't be needed.

Good luck and God Bless.
