Question
I have just got a pair of Alexandrian parrots. They are about 4 weeks old. I wanted to know when they would be able to fly to prepared for clipping their feathers. Also, I feed it rice at the moment and is it ok to feed them with boiled peas. Most of the internet information says that peas are a good source of protien for them. Is it ok to feed them those at this age? What are the other things I can feed them like fruits or vegetables or meat also?

Answer
Hi Kevin, you're right to be wondering about the proper nutrition for these gorgeous parrots. Rice isn't nearly enough and peas are very good (boiled is ok, but don't overcook them; they should still be bright green).
When it comes to wing clipping, I'm of the belief that a baby needs to learn that they can fly. Not so much soar around the house, but fly enough to land lightly on surfaces.
Then, a "baby" clip should be done. Just a few feathers so the bird can't get lift, but can still glide gently to the ground or other surface.
As the bird gets older you can clip more, as necessary, but never clip so much that the bird cannot land lightly if startled off a perch.
