QuestionLast night I thought my mouse was giving birth, she was obiously pregnant, but there was blood all over her nest, she couldnt walk and was obiously trying to give birth, so I turned off the light and went to bed, I woke up in the morning and looked, no babies, and shes dead, and her stomach is still gigantic, also when I looked closer she looked like she had a bubble coming out of her, i pulled on it with tweezers and it came out a little more and it looks like a worm.. What happened to my mouse?.
AnswerThis must have been very upsetting for you. I think you did the right thing, theres nothing you could have done to help (not unless you have a 24 vet) and you could have stressed her out more by trying to help. The 'little worm' could be an umbilical cord.
If she has been with a male or if there is any chance a wild mouse squeezed into the cage then she's likely to be pregnant. The gestation period is 19-21 days so if your mouse was only one or two weeks gone then she may have had a premature pregnancy (usually a result of stress).
If she hasn't had contact with a male mouse then she could have had an internal problem leading to bloating of the abdomen which caused her death.
I am sure this wasn't your fault so please don't blame yourself.
I am really sorry for your loss, please feel free to ask anymore questions.
