Question
Hi Natasha,
I have a pet mouse that I rescued as a 1-2 day old baby 3 years ago; Mr. Jingles is his name and he is a joy! Over the past week or so he doesn't seem to be eating as much nor hiding any of his treats (which he used to do very reguarly)...tonight I noticed a red kind of sac protruding from his anus...do you think it is hemmorhoids or something else? What can I do for him? Should I take him to a vet...I don't know if there are any pocket pet vets in my area...I just don't want him to be pain...I love him very much and know that he is very old in mouse years...any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks a bunch!

Robin

Answer
Dear Robin,

That's wonderful that he has lived so long.

He definitely needs to go to the vet. Mice get a lot of the same illnesses as do people, so it might well be something like a hemmorhoid. There is nothing that I can tell you that will help him. Put some vaseline on the protrusion too.

Call around to all the vets and see if there is anyone who sees pocket pets/exotics on a regular basis. See if you can talk to a vet immediately to find out what your immediate course of action should be.

I'm sorry I can't help. I'm not a vet or trained at all. I would appreciate it if you would write back to tell me what happens. That's how I learn more, and it might help another mouse another time.

I wish him the best of luck

PS I have decided it would be cool to be Facebook friends with some of my questioners. If you would like to friend me, I am the only Natasha Millikan on Facebook. And you will get to see my mice... and more so, my rats, including mouse-sized rats! Be sure to attach a message or I might not accept. But if you have questions do continue to use this site, so that other people can benefit from the answers.
