Where to get mice in NYC

Question
Can you recommend a reputable place to buy fancy mice in New York City?  The
large pet stores only carry albinos.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Whitney,

I know Petco sometimes has black mice.  The mice in the Petco I go to (Union Square) generally seem pretty clean and healthy, though one time I went there were 4-5 sick mice (possibly genetically) in the cage.  When I pointed them out the mice were removed (and the fellow lied to me, it occurred to me later, that they would nurse them back to health).  That's where I get my mouse accessories.  i get my Fancy mice from a private breeder (Mikiodo) who unfortunately doesn't adopt out to the public.

I also know where you can get half-Fancy/half-city mice for free!!  I live in Brooklyn, and one of my Show mice just gave virgin birth to ten babies!  This means a tiny male must have gotten through the bars of the cage.  The babies were born on the 6th and will be ready for new homes on the first of April.  I think they will have wild mouse coloring but their mom is a very very sweet dappled grey Show mouse with big, beautiful black eyes (she came from a breeder in Maryland).  They will be very tame (my job for the next three weeks!).

Because males generally can't live together and certainly can't live with my females, I may have to ask my breeder to 'edit' the litter for me, which means to kill the males.  I hate the idea.  I need to find mouse lovers now so I can plan.  If you want just one mouse, a male is perfect.  if you want to save more than one, you can try with two males-- often brothers can live together if they have never been separated-- but would have to be prepared to offer separate cages later on if they fight as adults.  Or you can take 2-3 females. I haven't checked yet to find out how many of each I have.

You can write to me at my email address mouse@lovemouse.com.  I'd love to give my mice away to a good home where they will not be eaten by snakes.

I hope to hear from you, but if not, good luck getting new mice (just keep checking Petco) and have fun with your new adoptees!

squeaks n giggles,

Natasha
